Garvey Lawn and Lloyd Knibb tribute






















Lloyd Knibb, talented drummer of the great Jamaican band The Skatalites passed away from cancer liver in this Thursday, May 12, 2010 at age 80 .. Knibb is credited for inventing the beat of ska at Studio One''Clement Coxsone Dodd''. He played his last show in Peru about a month ago. Knibb was born on March 8, 1931 in Jamaica, and was best known for his contribution to the rhythms of ska. He played for The Skatalites and Tommy McCook and The Supersonics. Knibb began playing in jazz bands in the '40s, the band starting with Val Bennett and honed his technical skills by becoming a member of Jazz Band Eric Dean, playing popular dances of the day (rumba, cha cha) and songs by Glen Miller. Knibb gained its widest audience, however, as the drummer for The Skatalites. The Skatalites recorded for Treasure Isle (Duke Reid), Studio One (Clement Dodd) and Top Deck (Phillip Yap), releasing the music of ska in the 60 who responded to an audience at a pace that is uniquely Jamaican.
Knibb, along with the other original members of the Skatalites, the group reformed to play at the concert of Reggae Sunsplash in Montego Bay, Jamaica in July 1983. The success of the meeting led to the reform of the Skatalites band as a full-time visits, Knibb assembly to which he remained until his death in 2011.Estiveram now even playing in Brazil for some opportunities .. his last years, Knibb lived in Hull, Massachusetts with the musician, friend and long time companion John and his wife, Adele. His son plays in Dion ska band based in Boston called Dion Knibb & The Agitators.
On May 12, 2011, after being ill for some time with liver cancer and receiving treatment in the U.S., Knibb traveled back to his hometown Kingston, Jamaica, to be among their relatives and friends. Later that day, Knibb died at age 80, was sleeping peacefully just before ...
